Mage-OS Grew Up in 2025: The Community Fork as Insurance
November 25, 2025 - by Alexandru-Manuel Carabus
While Adobe leaned into SaaS, the community fork Mage-OS had its strongest year yet. Here is what it is, what shipped in 2025, and why it matters even if you never switch.

While Adobe spent 2025 steering toward SaaS, the open-source side of the Magento world had its own big year. Mage-OS, the community-driven fork of Magento Open Source, went from promising project to a serious, governed platform.
What Mage-OS is
Mage-OS is a community-run fork of Magento Open Source, designed to be a drop-in alternative that stays compatible with Magento 2.4 and Adobe Commerce. It is backed by an association of agencies and contributors rather than a single vendor, which is the whole point: no one company controls its direction.
What shipped in 2025
It was a productive year. Mage-OS held its second General Assembly, growing to 135 members and 13 partner organizations and electing a board for the 2025 to 2027 term. A modern, accessible admin theme landed as a cornerstone of the 1.1 release. Late in the year, Mage-OS 2.0 arrived with automatic translation via DeepL, OpenAI and Google Gemini, finer-grained per-page SEO settings, CMS widget support and a clearer view of stock reservations.
Why a fork matters even if you never switch
You do not have to run Mage-OS for it to be valuable to you. Its existence keeps the open-source line healthy and independent of any single company is strategy. That is real insurance in a year when Adobe made its SaaS direction clear. It sits alongside the other big open-source signal of the year, Hyva going fully open source, as evidence the community intends to keep the platform open.
Should you switch to Mage-OS?
For most merchants the honest answer is: not urgently. Mage-OS is designed to be drop-in compatible, so switching is realistic, but Magento Open Source is not going anywhere in the short term. The value today is knowing the option exists and is well run, so your platform choice is never hostage to one vendor.
