Romanian Payments on Magento: euPlatesc, Mollie, PayU, Netopia and Getting Paid Locally

Magento does not speak Romanian payments out of the box. If you sell in Romania you need euPlatesc, Netopia, PayU or Mollie, cash on delivery that actually works, and, on a modern Hyvä Checkout, an integration that did not exist until we built it. Here is how to get paid locally on Magento.
Magento is a global platform, and out of the box it ships global gateways such as PayPal and Braintree. What it does not ship is the way Romania actually pays: euPlatesc, Netopia, and cash on delivery. If you sell in Romania, getting paid locally is its own project. Here is what it takes, with a heavy focus on euPlatesc, the local favorite, and the Hyvä Checkout gap we closed.
How Romania actually pays
The local reality has two halves. Over three quarters of Romanian ecommerce transactions are by card, but cash on delivery is still how most orders are paid, 60 to 65 percent of them. So a Romanian store needs both: real local card processing and a proper cash-on-delivery flow, with the courier integration behind it. Miss either and you lose orders. Apple Pay and Google Pay are now around 10 percent and climbing.
The local gateways: euPlatesc, Netopia, PayU and Mollie
The players. euPlatesc is the long-standing local favorite for Romanian online stores: local cards, fast settlement, clear fees, and trusted by Romanian merchants. Netopia Payments (mobilPay) is the largest local processor, with more than 19 years behind it, all the card schemes plus Apple and Google Pay. PayU is a strong regional option, with local acquiring and solid fraud tools across Central and Eastern Europe. Mollie is the European choice: one clean integration that turns on cards and the popular EU methods, which helps the moment you sell across the border. Stripe and Adyen exist too, but they are pricier for European cards and less local. For most Romanian stores the practical core is euPlatesc or Netopia, often with cash on delivery alongside.
Why this is a real integration, not a checkbox
Magento does not have these built in, so each is an extension or a custom integration: the payment method in checkout, the API connection to the gateway, the callback handling that confirms payment, refunds, and reconciliation back to the order. Do it sloppily and you get orders stuck at the pending-payment status, failed callbacks, or refunds that do not flow. It is the same discipline as e-Factura, which we wrote about in the e-Factura guide. The checkout is where money and data both have to be exactly right.
euPlatesc on Hyvä Checkout: the gap we closed
Here is the specific problem we solved. euPlatesc has long had Magento integrations for the classic Luma checkout. But the modern, fast checkout most serious Magento stores now run is Hyvä Checkout, and euPlatesc did not work with it out of the box. So a Romanian merchant faced a bad choice: a fast Hyvä Checkout without their preferred local gateway, or their gateway on a slow legacy checkout. We closed that gap by building the official euPlatesc compatibility module for Hyvä Checkout, so you get euPlatesc, the gateway Romanian shoppers already trust, on the fast checkout that actually converts. The gateways we partner with
euPlatesc, PayU and Mollie are payment partners of ours, not just names we plug in. That gives you a direct line to each gateway, integration modules we build and keep current, and a faster route when a callback misbehaves or a new method needs switching on. When your processor and your Magento team already work together, the checkout stops being a game of telephone and becomes one system somebody actually owns.
Cash on delivery that actually works
Do not underestimate cash on delivery. Because it is the majority of Romanian orders, the flow has to be first-class: clear at checkout, wired to your courier (Cargus, Sameday, FAN, DPD) so the collected amount and the shipping label are correct, and reconciled when the courier settles. A cash-on-delivery flow left as an afterthought is a warehouse and finance headache. This is part of building a store that is genuinely Romanian, not a global template with the leu bolted on. Getting it right
Taking local payments on Magento in Romania means euPlatesc or Netopia done properly, cash on delivery that reconciles, and, if you are on Hyvä, a checkout that supports your gateway.
